Thanks to Watches for ELA, a weekend break for the families of ELA Germany
From Friday 6 to Monday 9 June 2025, 21 families took part in ELA Germany’s traditional gathering weekend in Duderstadt. This event was made possible thanks to funds raised by ELA International during the 2024 edition of Watches for ELA.
On Friday evening, the 70 participants gathered around a large campfire. Both new families and regulars were warmly welcomed by the ELA team – a perfect start to an exceptional weekend.
Following the discussion groups on Saturday morning, two activities were offered in the afternoon.
The first group visited the European Bread Museum in Ebergötzen. The families baked fresh, delicious bread under the watchful eye of professionals before exploring the museum, its herb garden, its mills and its vintage vehicles.
The second group went for a walk around Lake Seeburger. Despite a few showers, which did not deter the participating families, this walk allowed them to admire magnificent views and, above all, to chat with one another and share this moment amidst splendid natural surroundings.
Then it was time for the disco! With a mirror ball, glow-in-the-dark bracelets, necklaces and snacks, the party was in full swing and everyone joined in the dancing, whether in a wheelchair, using a walker or on foot. The children were able to let their imaginations run wild during a ceramic plate painting workshop and went home with their creations as a souvenir of this weekend of sharing.
On Sunday, a group visited the Gut Herbigshagen estate, the heart of the Heinz Sielmann Foundation, to build insect hotels. Everyone had the chance to help design shelters for wild bees using metal boxes or artistic clay blocks.
The other group, meanwhile, went for a walk with alpacas along the country lanes. After a brief introduction and demonstration, the group explored the gently undulating grassy paths, then discovered the garden and its animals, such as chickens and sheep.
The visit to the bear park on Monday provided an opportunity for warm exchanges and a chance to connect with nature. To round off the day, all the families left a powerful symbol of their solidarity: using their fingerprints, they formed the word “ELA”. These fingerprints were accompanied by personal messages explaining what ELA means to each of them. The families returned home with precious memories and a renewed sense of courage and energy to face daily life with the illness.
We’re already looking forward to seeing you again in 2026!
